Almost half of people with ADHD also have a learning disability. The majority of learning disabilities are reading disorders, such as dyslexia. It can be difficult to properly diagnose either ADHD or dyslexia if one has already been diagnosed with one of these conditions. Many times dyslexia is not identified, since reading issues become attributed solely to ADHD. Research shows that having both ADHD and dyslexia clinically presents differently than just having one of these issues. This presentation will focus on the genetic, biological, and neuropsychological similarities and differences between the two. Proper assessment is essential since not recognizing one disorder makes treatment very difficult. How ADHD and dyslexia present throughout the lifespan will be discussed, as well as strategic treatment interventions and recommendations for academic accommodations.
